VISAS FOR HUNGARY

Aussies and Kiwis visiting Hungary score up to 90 days visa free before you either need to apply for one, or leave the Schengen Area. If you leave the area for 180 days, you can come back for another 90 visa-free days. Too easy! 

While you might not need a visa, you do need to have:

- A passport with at least six months validity on entry
- Proof of sufficient funds in the form of a bank statement or cash
- Return airline tickets/proof of onward travel
- All documents showing proof of purpose of trip
- All documents and visas required for the next destination, if applicable 

These rules can change quickly. Contact your nearest Hungarian Embassy or Consulate before you travel for the most up to date information.

ON ARRIVAL

There are no direct flights from Australia to Hungary, and with layovers and stopovers in connection countries all over the world, you're looking at at least a whole day in travelling time. It's pretty handy that Budapest Airport operates 24/7, with eateries open around the clock then, isn't it?!

If you're coming in from a neighbouring European city like Vienna, Prague, Bratislava, Krakow, Warsaw, Zagreb, Belgrade or Bucharest, chances are you will be using MAV-START - Hungary’s national train line. There are plenty of trains leaving and entering Hungary every day and bookings for these trips start 60 days prior to departure. Although the trains in are comfortable and usually have free Wi-Fi, if you want to get in and start exploring faster you may want to consider flying into one of the top three airports - Budapest, Debrecen or Gyor-Per.

Once you have landed, before you dive head first into Hungarian goulash and dumplings, you will need to clear customs and line up to have your passports checked. If you are not travelling on an EU passport, make sure to line up in the “All Passports” section.

If arriving between 5am-12:30am, the #100E bus will take you from the airport to the city centre. Otherwise Főtaxi taxi cabs will get you there for ~22 euros.

GETTING AROUND

You’ve reached your destination, oh what elation! If you have landed in the capital Budapest, the easiest way to get around once you have left the airport or train station is by metro. You can check out all the timetables and routes once you have landed as they are super easy to find and also have an English sections for travellers.
 
The city currently has four metro lines connecting Buda and Pest. Grabbing a ticket is easy and you have a few choices depending on how long you are staying in the city. A single ticket will only set you back 350 HUF ($1.75 AUD roughly) which you will need to validate at the orange automated machines located near the tracks. If you are staying for a longer time or will use the metro multiple times you can also purchase a 24 hour card or a 7 day travel card that allows you to travel and change lines on all four metro lines.
 
Getting around the rest of the country is a breeze thanks to Hungary’s amazing train lines. You can get practically anywhere within the country by using the MAV-START website or asking for information at the train station itself. Tickets for most parts of Hungary are all under $20 AUD, so it is a super cheap option and reasonably fast and comfy!

BEST TIME TO VISIT

Make sure to pack your sunscreen and your brolly because summer in Hungary is hot, hot, hot with high chances of rain. Winter however can be extremely cold and somewhat dry. So it all really comes down to what kind of climate you like to travel in.
 
September to November is probably your best time to visit, not too hot and not too cold. You also get to witness autumn leaves falling and turning amazing shades of red and orange. On the plus side as well, the crowds are usually lower than peak tourist time (summer season from June to August).

WHERE TO GO

No trip to Hungary would be complete without a stop in its capital, Budapest. Get ready to do some exploring and show off your beach bod while you’re at it - Budapest is home to the largest thermal water cave system in the world! The world’s second largest synagogue and the third largest Parliament building also reside in Budapest and of course, the Danube River, Europe’s second largest river after the Volga river.
 
Outside of the capital lies amazing cities waiting to be explored like Siofok in Lake Balaton, home to Europe’s largest lake and nearby Heviz, which has the largest thermal lake in the world (seriously, water temps will vary here from 24-37 degrees... did someone say spa session!?)

MUST KNOW TIPS

Don’t miss your chance to check out Szimpla Kert, the largest and coolest of all the Ruins Bars in Budapest. What’s a Ruins Bar you ask? These are bars built in the old Jewish Quarter of Buda and are often found in abandoned buildings and shops.

Make sure you come hungry to Hungary, as the country is full of delicious food particularly involving stews, potatoes, dumplings, and of course, paprika.

While English is a very common language in Hungary, earn a few brownie points by learning a few basic phrases like kérem (please) and köszönöm (thank you).

  • Am I covered medically while holidaying in Hungary?

  •  When it comes to alcohol we advise you to drink in moderation. One too many Pálinka could see you jeopardizing your cover. Please note that we may exclude any claims where excessive drugs or alcohol have been involved.

  • I have high value items; how much can I insure them for?

  • If you have an expensive item that you just can’t leave behind you can insure it separately for up to $5,000. Please note that high value item cover is only available under our comprehensive plan.

  • Am I covered for pickpocketing in Hungary?

  • Yes, you’re covered for muggings provided of course, you were acting with reasonable care (i.e. did not leave your belongings unattended). If you’re the victim of a pickpocket, you’d be covered for loss, theft and damage to your luggage and personal effects. If you are robbed it’s important that you get a police report and contact us as soon as possible.

  • What age limits apply to Zoom travel insurance policies?

  • You must be under the age of 85 to buy a policy with Zoom. Those under 79 years can purchase a policy for a maximum trip duration of 365 days. Those aged between 80-85 years can purchase a policy for a maximum trip duration of 184 days only. You must also be under the age of 69 to purchase our add-on ski or adventure packs.

  • Can I reduce my excess with Zoom products?

  • Yes you can reduce the standard excess of $200 by paying a excess reduction fee within the payment process. 

  • What is a dependant?

  • This means your dependant children or grandchildren under the age of 19 at the date of policy issue who are travelling with you.
