VISAS FOR CAMBODIA

Aussies and Kiwis visiting Cambodia need a visa. If you're travelling for tourism, good news - you can get your 30-day tourist e-visa online through the Cambodian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation.  While they are valid for entry through the big international airports - Phnom Penh, Siem Reap and Sihanoukville - and some regional airports, they aren't valid at land borders. Standard tourist visas are also available at a number of land border crossings. For stays more than 30 days, you'll want to contact the Cambodian Embassy in advance for a longer visa.

These rules can change quickly, and some land borders may be sporadically closed to tourists. Contact your nearest Cambodian Embassy or Consulate before you travel for the most up to date information.

ON ARRIVAL

From Phnom Penh International Airport, it'll cost around $12-18USD to get to anywhere in the city via an airport taxi. There are three 'official' price zones, but tourists are often overcharged, so make sure you know which zone you're heading to and what the price will be before you put your bags in the car. Taxis are widely accepted as the fastest and safest option, and it seems most taxi drivers speak English. A remork-moto (the local word for the ubiquitous tuk tuk) from the airport is around $9USD. While we don't recommend it for safety and bag-snatching reasons, some travellers hop on the back of a motorcycle for $3USD. Finally, if you're budget conscious, there's always the bus. Leave the aiport by going straight ahead, and turn right when you're outside the gate to find the #3 bus line. It makes 20 stops on the way to the way to the Night Market on the Riverside, including Central Market, and costs just 1500 riel ($0.37USD) - just make sure you have riel, or a $1USD bill, because they won't be able to charge large bills.

From Siem Reap International Airport to the city is around $10USD in an airport van or taxi, $9USD for a remork-moto (or $6 if you walk out through the parking lot toward the exits) or $9USD via motorcycle from the taxi stand ($2 just outside the airport). Again, we don't recommend motorcycles, and encourage you to be particularly watchful with your belongings in case of bag-snatchers.

Sihanoukville International Airport is a tiny airport 20km from the town, and remork-moto drivers have organised into a part union-part mafia to force prices up. Instead, consider the shuttle bus or a taxi share. Both are $5USD per person, and will drop you in any area of town you want to go. 

GETTING AROUND

A network of private bus companies will get you anywhere you want to go in Cambodia, but often you will have to visit their offices to find out when they are departing. Otherwise, remork-motos and taxis are the easiest way to get around. Use google maps to help direct your driver if they aren't sure how to get to your destination, and agree on a price before you get in.

BEST TIME TO VISIT

March to May is the hot and dry season, with temperatures regularly above 35 degrees. It's dusty, brown, and most of the tourists stay away, so the lines to see major attractions are short. June through August is hot and wet, while September to mid November is cool and wet. November through February is the most pleasant time to visit, while it is cool but not raining every day, but it also means that it's peak tourist season. 

WHERE TO GO

Siem Reap is one of Cambodia's most popular destinations. While the province is a bustling hive of activity, Angkor makes it truly unique. This sprawling archeological megacity founded in the 9th century was home to God-Kings and their citizens for centuries, and featured complex water systems, detailed stonework and impressive temples. The most famous of these, Angkor Wat, has surived war, theft and the elements to remain one of the largest religious monuments in the world.

Capital city Phnom Penh has a wide range of exquisite Khmer architectural works, including the stunning Royal Palace, Buddhist structures the Silver Padoga and Wat Phnom, as well as museums and monuments to the terror of the Khmer Rouge regime. 

Kon Tonsay (Rabbit Island) is the perfect place to regroup and detox. Three hours from Phnom Penh, there's no electricity (and no Wi-Fi) so get ready to relax off-grid.

Battambang is Cambodia's second-largest city, but somehow missed out on the flurry of tourists. With its mix of Khmer and French-colonial styles, stunning temples and laid-back vibes, it is a great place to be immersed in Khmer culture.

MUST KNOW TIPS

While the local currency is riel, most tourist transactions are done in US dollars. Make sure you change your large bills for smaller ones at a bank. If you're taking money out at an ATM, be aware that AUD/NZD to USD exchange rate and ATM fees can start to eat into your budget.

You will notice that Cambodian people smile - a lot! - and it's not always because they're happy. Saving face is a big part of Cambodian culture, so if someone smiles a little too hard, it might mean they're confused about what you mean. So check your order, or use a translation or maps app to help you out. But make it a two-way street - do as the Cambodians do and smile. All the time. If you don't it says that you are unfriendly, dislike others and do not want to relate. 

As with all emerging tourist destinations, corruption and scams are rife in Cambodia. Classics are uniformed police asking for extra money for official processes, the milk for a baby scam, or child beggars - often 'employed' by criminal gangs. If you think you're being scammed by an official, smile and ask to speak to a superior. For other scammers, a smile and a simple "teh or-khun" (no, thank you) or two should be sufficient.

  • If you have an expensive item that you just can’t leave behind you can insure it separately for up to $5,000. Please note that high value item cover is only available under our comprehensive plan.

  • Am I covered for pickpocketing in Cambodia?

  • Yes, you’re covered for pickpocketing and muggings, provided of course you were acting with reasonable care (i.e. did not leave your belongings unattended). If you’re the victim of a pickpocket, you’d be covered for loss, theft and damage to your luggage and personal effects. If you are robbed, it’s important that you get a police report and contact us as soon as possible.

  • What age limits apply to Zoom travel insurance policies?

  • You must be under the age of 85 to buy a policy with Zoom. Those under 79 years can purchase a policy for a maximum trip duration of 365 days. Those aged between 80-85 years can purchase a policy for a maximum trip duration of 184 days only. You must also be under the age of 69 to purchase our add-on ski or adventure packs.

  • Can I reduce my excess with Zoom products?

  • Yes you can reduce the standard excess of $200 by paying a excess reduction fee within the payment process.
